The SF Giants have had a very good start to the 2025 season. Their record stands at 19-10 and they are coming off a series win against the Texas Rangers with both of their wins coming on walk-offs. Does this mean the team is just getting lucky?
Sunday's comical walk-off against Texas due to a literal comedy of errors marked the fifth walk-off the Giants have had in the month of April. This is the first time the Giants have had five walk-offs in a calendar month since May of 2013.
SF Giants have been lucky and good in 2025 season so far
Walk-offs do not always tell you a ton about a team. Good teams can have few walk-offs while bad or mediocre teams can have a lot of them. For reference, the 2013 Giants finished that season with a record of 76-86.
Giants doubters may try to argue that the team has gotten lucky with all of their walk-off victories early in the season. What that ignores is that the Giants are following the blueprint laid out going into the season.
The Giants knew they were not going to be an offensive juggernaut in 2025. President of baseball operations Buster Posey spoke in the offseason about how pitching and defense were going to be the team's main strengths while they improved at scoring runs in different ways.
Thus far, that vision has largely come to fruition. Their pitching staff as a whole has been very solid and the team has thrived on defense as they currently sport the best team fielding percentage in all of MLB. They have also thrived at situational hitting which has been a big key to their success.
It was understood that the Giants were likely going to play a lot of close games as part of this blueprint. They currently have a record of 7-3 in one-run contests so they are executing on the plan perfectly so far this season.
Of course, one could argue that the Giants have been a bit lucky to have had success in close games with so many walk-off hits. Yet, there is something to be said for a team gaining confidence early on that they can come back from any deficit or that they are going to find a way to win the game if things are close going into the later innings.
It is just April but one cannot deny that something feels different about these Giants. Whether it is the tone that is being set at the top by Posey or the chemistry in the clubhouse, it just seems like this team has some good mojo going right now.
That does not mean their success is only the product of luck, though. This team has shown us they are pretty dang good and Lady Luck has been on their side thus far which is an ideal combination for success.
