As the SF Giants are about to embark on a new season, a change has been made in the clubhouse that is sure to provide added motivation for every player on the team. The team's World Series titles from last decade are going to be on full display.
This news comes via reporter Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle who reported it via social media. The trophies will replace a hallway mural and some TV's in the clubhouse.
SF Giants clubhouse change sure to add motivation
While it is not reported who made this decision, it would not be at all surprising if president of baseball operations Buster Posey had a hand in this change. He played a large part in bringing those three championships to San Francisco so it is not a bad idea to remind the current roster of what the ultimate goal is for the team.
This decision is also consistent with the decision to move the analytics department out of the clubhouse. Both of these changes are symbolic and show that the team is trying to get back to the precepts that led them to those three World Series titles.
Moving those three championship trophies into the clubhouse could be seen as egotistical or unnecessarily intimidating, but they are in fact the opposite. Posey would not want those trophies on display there to scare players or as some sort of nostalgic paean to the team's glory days. The former catcher knows better than anyone that championships are not won by one player, but instead by a collective group of teammates all striving towards a common goal. It could instead be seen as a vote of confidence in the roster that he truly believes they can go out and do something special this season
The Giants seem to have better team chemistry this season thanks in large part to the fact that Posey was able to solidify the roster well before camp began which allowed new additions like Willy Adames and Justin Verlander to ingratiate themselves with their teammates and develop relationships with other players. Manager Bob Melvin has even said he noticed a change in camp this season compared to last season. Verlander has also said he believes the team is being slept on too much.
It is clear that the belief is there from the front office on down. The Giants made a habit of shocking the baseball world and proving the prognosticators wrong in the 2010's. Perhaps with Posey back, the Giants will be able to shock the baseball world yet again in 2025.
