The top name that has come up in SF Giants trade rumors as of late is Bryce Eldridge. As the top prospect in the organization, he is the most valuable trade chip but the Giants have another prospect in Josuar Gonzalez who is valuable as well.
Gonzalez is the No. 2 prospect in the organization and is and 18-year-old shortstop from the Dominican Republic. He is seen as one of the top 100 prospects in major league baseball so he has a ton of upside even though there is a long way to go until he would be considered for the big leagues.
SF Giants have a great trade chip in Josuar Gonzalez
In 2025 in the Dominican, Gonzalez slashed .288/.404/.455 with four home runs and 24 runs batted in as well as 33 stolen bases across 52 games. That is not a ton to go off, but it's clear he has some speed and has upside at the plate.
The fact that he plays shortstop could complicate things down the road, though. Willy Adames is already San Francisco's long-term shortstop after signing a seven-year deal last offseason. However, maybe down the road the Giants would move him to second base if Gonzalez was ready to make the jump to the big leagues.
There is definitely a case to hold on to Gonzalez given how much upside he has. The Giants have not had a young international prospect from the Dominican like him make a major impact at the big league level so maybe he could be the one.
At the same time, the Giants just moved on from Marco Luciano, a former top prospect from the Dominican who seemed to have limitless upside and was seen as a shortstop of the future.
The Giants could have dealt Luciano years ago and at least gotten something for him, instead they simply waived him and got nothing in return.
Maybe they look at that debacle and are determined to not let the same thing happen with Gonzalez. Maybe whatever his trade value is right now is at its peak. If there is a team with a solid starting pitcher willing to give that pitcher to the Giants in exchange for Gonzalez that has to be something the Giants entertain.
There is always a risk that prospects could end up doing great things for another organization, but looking at San Francisco's recent history with its top prospects maybe the Giants should shop Gonzalez more than Eldridge.
