SF Giants should be happy as Dodgers continue to ruin baseball with Tarik Skubal trade

As if there was a way for Saturday night’s loss to hurt just a little more for SF Giants fans, right as the team got walked off by the San Diego Padres news broke that the Los Angeles Dodgers had acquired Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal.

At this point, nothing the Dodgers do is shocking. They’re going to sign the best free agents and trade for the best players and half of them are going to stink and yet they are still going to win because they have a great farm system as well and already have a stacked roster.

They don’t need Skubal. They already have Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Blake Snell and Tyler Glasgow and Shohei Ohtani but poor Ohtani’s knee hurts a bit so they’re going to give him a little breather by bringing in the two-time reigning American League Cy Young Award winner.

It’s no shock. If you thought former Giants general manager Scott Harris, now the president of baseball operations for the Detroit Tigers, might have a backbone and at least try to work out a deal with a team that was not the Dodgers, think again. The return Detroit got also seems suspiciously light.

This adds more support to the conspiracy theory that Farhan Zaidi was a Dodger plant the whole time with the Giants and maybe the conspiracy went even deeper than we realized. He hired Harris and the 2021 season got Harris a job with Detroit because the Dodgers play eight Stratego moves ahead and knew they needed a mole within the Tigers to give them Skubal because their models had already predicted his greatness.

In all seriousness though, it feels like all we can do is laugh at this point. Maybe cry. What else is there to do when it just feels inevitable that the Dodgers are going to three-peat? Of course, intellectually we know it’s not a slam dunk. They very easily could have, and probably should have, lost last year’s World Series and the year prior they were on the ropes in the NLDS to the Padres.

Still, at this point it just feels like they’re probably going to win it all and if they do, CBA negotiations are going to go on forever and the 2027 season may be truncated or may not even happen due to a lockout.

The Giants should be happy though. The only way they can catch up with the Dodgers at this point is if the rules change. Impose a salary cap. Get rid of deferred money. Make the game fair again. We know ownership hasn't been willing to go all in so maybe new rules will at least give them a fighting chance.

We learned in school that monopolies are bad. Uncompetitive practices aren’t good. The Dodgers have a monopoly and some will argue that’s good for baseball but Giants fans know it isn’t. Dynasties used to be built with heart, drafting great talent, and some magic. The Dodgers are now proving they can be bought.

I hope they’re happy because a year from now I’m going to be writing articles about the best Giants players to wear the No. 7 because there will be no actual Giants baseball to write about. Yeah, pretty great for baseball.
