This season hurts for the SF Giants for a lot of reasons. They were not supposed to be this bad on paper and yet they find themselves with one of the worst records in MLB and are seemingly bereft of answers.
Not only are they losing, but they are losing in embarrassing ways by making silly mistakes and then compounding them with baffling postgame remarks. It’s just bad all around.
The thing that makes all of this even worse is the fact that there is likely going to be a lockout in the offseason. MLB and the MLBPA are so far apart in their proposals for the next collective bargaining agreement that it feels inevitable that next season will at least be delayed, if not worse.
That means baseball in 2027 is very much in the air and the Giants are going to be entering next year with the bad taste of the 2026 season still in their mouths.
Giants' future is up in the air as lockout looms
At least last time there was a lockout back in 2021 the Giants were coming off the best regular season in the history of the franchise. Yes, the end of that season was heartbreaking but there was still a lot of hope around the franchise that better days were ahead even if Buster Posey’s shock retirement did put a damper on things.
Unless the Giants make some huge trades and get rid of their big contracts ahead of the deadline, the future of the franchise is going to be very much up in the air. How can the front office justify running it back when things went so bad in 2026? Will the team actually be willing to commit real money to the pitching staff? Is it time to rebuild?
All of these questions are massive and none of them will be answered until the MLB and MLBPA can come to some sort of agreement on a new CBA which will almost certainly take months.
Last time there was a lockout it lasted from December to early March and it’s not hard to imagine it dragging on even further this time around especially if the Los Angeles Dodgers win another World Series and demands for a salary cap reach a fever pitch.
Giants fans will just be on the couch wondering what direction the franchise is heading knowing that the team has dug itself a really big hole with the bad contracts it has and its poor play on the field.
