There weren’t many bullpen success stories for the SF Giants in 2026. There was mainly a lot of blown leads and carnage but amidst all that there was a bright spot in right-handed pitcher Trent Harris. The 27-year-old got called up in August and while he struggled early he quickly proved he may be part of the bullpen solution in 2027.
Harris went undrafted but the Giants signed him back in 2023. He worked his way through the minor leagues and put up solid numbers with a 0.43 ERA in 2023 and a 1.81 ERA in 2024. 2025 was a bit more of a struggle as he had a 4.40 ERA but made it up to Triple-A.
He pitched well in Triple-A in 2026, recording a 3.12 ERA in 40 and 1/3 innings pitched with 52 strikeouts. That earned him his call-up to the big leagues.
Things did not get off to a good start at all for Harris. He looked very amped up in his first outing and gave up three earned runs while only recording one out. Through his first five outings he had a 7.71 ERA, but after that tough start he really found a groove and only gave up one earned run after that.
He finished the season with a 2.31 ERA and 27 strikeouts compared to seven walks in 23 and 1/3 innings pitched. He also recorded five holds and two saves in two opportunities so he was arguably the team’s most effective closer which isn’t saying very much.
Harris showed off a really high release point which allows him to pair a mid-90s fastball with a curveball that had some really good drop on it. He also featured a cutter and a sweeper so he has the pitch mix of a starter which could make him an effective reliever.
Giants could need Harris to play a big role in bullpen in 2027
The Giants would be smart to bring in some new relievers next season to try to have better results from the bullpen. Harris still has minor league options so there’s a chance the Giants will start him in the minors, but if he looks solid then San Francisco likely won’t hesitate to call him up.
They’re going to need contributions from everyone since it’s hard to put together a bullpen full of external guys only so he could be a nice homegrown success story if he builds upon what he did in 2026.
