SF Giants' only Silver Slugger hope is Luis Arraez who may make history with Phillies

After how this season has gone for the SF Giants, they don’t deserve any awards. Maybe they deserve a mean award like “Biggest Disappointment” which is what my parents give me every year for Christmas (just kidding). If they’re lucky they might be eligible for the “Didn’t Lose 100 Games” award but even that is far from a sure thing at this point.

They may have one award-winner though. Sort of. Luis Arraez could very well take home his third career Silver Slugger trophy and he spent over half his season with the Giants so at least that counts for something. 

The Silver Slugger winners were announced by FanSided last season and will be again this year. The Giants didn’t have any winners last year and haven’t had one since Buster Posey back in 2021. The award is meant to go to the best offensive player at each position in both leagues.

Because Arraez remained in the National League by being traded to the Phillies, he will be eligible for the award and he is also eligible for another batting title if he has the highest batting average of any NL hitter. He’s already won three of them with three different teams, and if he wins a fourth he will become the only player in MLB history to have won the batting title with four separate teams. 

Arraez is currently hitting .321/.354/.440 with six home runs and 54 runs batted in on the season. Since joining the Phillies he has hit .305/.318/.439. He has a comfortable lead right now when it comes to batting average as the closest competitor to him in the NL is Nick Gonzalez of the Pittsburgh Pirates who is hitting .307 on the year.

Luis Arraez will face some competition in Silver Slugger race

It’s not a sure thing that Arraez will win the Silver Slugger for second basemen. He will face competition from guys like Ketel Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Brandon Lowe of the Pittsburgh Pirates, and Ozzie Albies of the Atlanta Braves. Marte won each of the last two seasons, but given his current off-the-field antics and down year at the plate maybe his reign will come to an end.

Ultimately, MLB managers and coaches get to decide who wins. They cannot vote for players on their own team so odds are many will look at Arraez’s impressive year and decide he deserves the honor.

Arraez endeared himself to Giants fans in his short time with the team. It’s a shame his tenure with the Giants was so short and it would be a lot more fun if he was still with San Francisco trying to help the team make a push for the playoffs, but he’s helping the Phillies do that. 

He might also be able to add some gold to his silver collection too if he wins the Gold Glove Award which he certainly has a shot at. That would have been unthinkable at the start of the year, but it just speaks to what a great year he has had in 2026.
