SF Giants schedule will not do any favors in trying to avoid historically bad season for franchise

Can the SF Giants avoid 100 losses? They are sitting at 78 losses with 32 games to go, meaning that they have to win at least 11 of those games. The schedule will not do them any favors, as they have one of the toughest remaining schedules in baseball.

The Giants have only lost 100 games just once for a franchise that dates back to the 1800's. That came in 1985, when they finished the year with a 62-100 record.

The Giants cleaned house after that. Jim Davenport was replaced by Roger Craig as the team's skipper, and Al Rosen took over as the general manager.

Things turned around quickly for the Giants after that. They finished the 1986 season with 83 wins. In today's game, that would have been good enough to be on the fringes of the playoff picture, but this came before the Wild Card. By 1989, the turnaround was complete. The Giants reached the World Series after winning 92 games.

I am a little hazy on the details of that World Series, but I believe the baseball season was canceled before that series could be finished. What an odd time to cancel such an important series!

In 2017, the Giants flirted with 100 losses yet again, but narrowly avoided that outcome. It might be harder to avoid this time around.

The Giants are hoping for a similarly quick turnaround, as they experienced in 1985. At this point, there has been no indication that they will be making sweeping changes to the leadership group. Buster Posey is under contract for one more year to get the boat going in the right direction. He has expressed confidence that Tony Vitello will return as the manager next season. There will likely be some changes to his coaching staff.

For now, the Giants are focused on finishing out this year. It has been a disastrous season, and it could get even bumpier as the year winds down.

Over the next couple of weeks, the Giants will have a couple of soft pockets in the schedule. This includes a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds and a trio of games against the New York Mets.

The difficulty of the schedule ramps up in the final three weeks of the season. The face off against the Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals for six games apiece. They also have one more three-game series against the San Diego Padres.

The Dodgers will be in the playoffs this year, and the Cardinals and Padres are vying for a spot, too. The Giants hope to avoid reaching the 100-loss threshold, but they may set a new record in the wrong category if they are unable to win more than nine games through the remainder of the year. The schedule will not do them any favors.
