The SF Giants made a big move by calling up their top prospect Bryce Eldridge. However, that is not the only news nugget for the team on this Tuesday as they try to stay relevant in the National League Wild Card race.

SF Giants news: Infielder DFA'd, Eldridge's debut, rotation is a mess

Brett Wisely DFA'd, Matos optioned

To make room on the 40-man roster for Eldridge, the Giants designated infielder Brett Wisely for assignment. He did not have a great year with the Giants as he slashed .208/.269/.354 with one home run and 10 runs batted in across 22 games with the Giants this season.

He was solid with the Giants last season and filled in nicely at shortstop when he was needed. His bat cooled off as the year went on but it seemed like he was establishing himself as a solid utility bench option for the team.

This season showed that Casey Schmitt and Christian Koss were ahead of him on the depth chart though so the Giants felt comfortable designating him for assignment.

Additionally, to make room on the big league roster the Giants optioned Luis Matos to Triple-A. This move throws his future with the team into question.

Eldridge's debut

It was a bold move by Buster Posey to call up Eldridge this late in the season with the playoffs on the line. His debut was not all that dramatic as he went 0-3 with a strikeout as the Giants did not put up much of a fight and lost 8-1.

He did show off some of his power by driving a ball deep into left-center that was caught but would have been a homer in 23 MLB ballparks.

It was not the most exciting debut, but the Giants may need Eldridge to get hot as their offense has gone cold these last few days.

Starting rotation is a mess

The Giants are trying to piece together a workable starting rotation the rest of this season. They have their three main starters in Logan Webb, Robbie Ray, and Justin Verlander, but beyond that it gets kind of dicey. Kai-Wei Teng turned in a solid start last night as he only allowed one run in four innings of work, but the bullpen blew the game after he exited.

Tristan Beck is going to get the start on Tuesday night in Arizona but it seems like the Giants will probably have to piece together a few different pitchers to try and get them some length.

The Giants are still alive in the NL Wild Card race but these next two games almost feel like they are must-wins especially since the Diamondbacks are now ahead of the Giants in the standings.
