The SF Giants have reportedly made a huge move by calling up their top prospect Bryce Eldridge. By doing this, president of baseball operations Buster Posey has pushed all of his chips in on this season as the Giants try to make the playoffs.

This news was reported by San Francisco Chronicle reporter Susan Slusser on social media. Her article about the call-up can be read here.

SF Giants reportedly call up top prospect Bryce Eldridge

This move comes as a little bit of a surprise since Posey had thrown cold water on the idea of calling up Eldridge recently. The argument was that Eldridge is still 20 years old and need to mature a little more in the minors. Plus, he plays first base and the Giants already had three first basemen on the roster in Dominic Smith, Rafael Devers, and Wilmer Flores.

However, after Smith went on the IL with a hamstring injury he sustained in the series against the Dodgers, that opened the door for the Giants to call up Eldridge. They did not do that initially as they first called up Jerar Encarnacion, but now they have made the biggest blockbuster move they could make with two weeks remaining in the season.

We will see how this move pans out. Eldridge has put up impressive power numbers in the minor leagues this season as he has hit 25 home runs. Yet, he has also struck out 127 times so it is fair to wonder if he may be a bit outmatched by big league pitching.

It is also fair to wonder if this is too much pressure to put on the top prospect. The Giants are right in the thick of the NL Wild Card race so this move is not meant to ease Eldridge into the big leagues, it is meant to help the team win right now. This is a move that could backfire and potentially harm Eldridge's confidence if it does not pan out so there is risk involved.

However in a recent interview Eldridge gave it is clear that the 6-foot-7 left-handed slugger carries himself with a lot of confidence and is not afraid of big moments. He will likely relish this opportunity, but it is always fair to wonder if the lights will be too bright until a young player can prove that they aren't.

Nonetheless, you have to give it to Buster for doing everything he can to win and make these final two weeks of the season as exciting as possible. Even if the Giants come up short in this Wild Card chase, the fact that they have made it this interesting and we get to look forward to seeing what Eldridge can do is a win in and of itself.
