The SF Giants are now firmly in offseason mode after cleaning up their 40-man roster. One hopes that the rumors and signings will start up soon but given the uncertainty surrounding the lockout in early December teams may choose to be much more cautious as a result.
Before all of that though, there are some Giants news nuggets that are worth diving into a little bit.
SF Giants news nuggets as offseason is underway
Nick Hundley gets a promotion
While Tony Vitello is now the manager of the Giants, there was a time last offseason after Bob Melvin was fired when former Giants catcher Nick Hundley was a pretty heavy favorite to take over the manager role.
It made a lot of sense on paper since he and Buster Posey were teammates for a couple years and he was a former catcher without ton of coaching experience in the mold of Stephen Vogt, another former Giants catcher who San Francisco probably wishes it had hired instead of Bob Melvin when it had the chance.
Hundley eventually took his name out of the running due to family reasons and he was actually promoted within the Texas Rangers organization. Hundley is now the Vice President of Player Development for Texas which is a promotion from his role as a senior advisor to the baseball operations department.
It’s interesting to think how things might be different with Hundley as manager instead of Vitello, but clearly Hundley is happy and thriving in his situation in Texas.
Brian Sabean speaks on a potential reunion
We have covered how former Giants general manager Brian Sabean was let go by the New York Yankees and how he is eligible for election to the Hall of Fame next month and he spoke about both of these developments in an interview with Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic. The whole interview is well worth a read if you are able, but one notable nugget is his response when Baggarly asked him about the potential for him reuniting with the Giants now that he’s no longer with the Yankees.
“You never know. I’d certainly answer the call,” was Sabean’s response.
It would honestly be more surprising if Sabean is not back in the fold for the Giants at some point this offseason. Buster Posey obviously respects him and the Giants already have Dusty Baker and Bruce Bochy as advisers so why not add Sabean to the mix?
If the Giants are going to lean in on nostalgia why not quadruple down on it at this point?
One hopes there are more news updates soon about signings but for now this is what we have to tide us over. November could be a very interesting month for the Giants and the rest of MLB so keep your eyes peeled.
