Yankees' Brian Sabean decision opens the door to obvious SF Giants reunion

Bring him back.

The SF Giants have not made any public announcements about a front office shakeup following a disappointing 2026 season, but after the New York Yankees reportedly decided not to retain former Giants general manager Brian Sabean in his role as a special assistant to general manager Brian Cashman, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post, it seems fairly obvious that a reunion with the Giants is in Sabean's future.

Sabean was at the helm of the Giants' baseball operations department from 1997 to 2014. While Sabean made controversial decisions like trading Matt Williams away for Jeff Kent, by the end of his tenure with San Francisco he was pretty much universally regarded as a master of the craft. He helped the Giants reach the World Series four times and they won three of them thanks in large part to some of the key trade deadline moves and offseason signing he made.

After 2014, Sabean took more of a back seat and became executive vice president of baseball operations while Bobby Evans took over as GM. Evans is already an adviser to current president of baseball operations Buster Posey even though he had a fairly disappointing tenure as GM.

The rough last few years under Evans is what paved the way for Farhan Zaidi to take over as the Giants looked for a fresh perspective to help them limit payroll while still remaining somewhat competitive. Sabean wasn't a big factor during that time and went back to being a scout before leaving the franchise entirely in 2023.

He took a job working for Cashman, a pupil of his when he was with the New York Yankees prior to his time in San Francisco. But after another disappointing season for the Yankees that ended with an early playoff exit it seems they are shaking up the front office a bit even if Cashman and manager Aaron Boone will both be retained.

It's probably just a matter of time until the Giants bring Brian Sabean back

Sabean would be a natural fit amongst Posey's cadre of advisers which already includes Dusty Baker and Bruce Bochy. He is firmly of the old guard and old school way of thinking but after San Francisco's rough start in 2026 under rookie manager Tony Vitello he said that the skipper deserved a fair shot and deserved patience.

One might argue that the Giants shouldn't be turning to the past for answers, but Posey has made it clear he likes surrounding himself with figures of the old guard so it just seems like a glaringly obvious fit.

The Giants haven't won a World Series since Sabean was in the front office so maybe at the very least he is the good luck charm they need to get back on track but his wealth of knowledge and experience would obviously be an asset to Posey as well.
