The SF Giants lineup is set to get a boost with Rafael Devers joining the club in a stunning trade. That is not the only news, as Justin Verlander is nearing a return.
SF Giants News: Justin Verlander's return, Osleivis Basabe's status, and Rafael Devers' jersey number
1. Justin Verlander's return
Manager Bob Melvin told Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area that the veteran hurler is slated to start Wednesday's game against the Cleveland Guardians.
Verlander has been on the injured list since the middle of May with a pec injury. He has been throwing bullpens recently, and Melvin's confirmation does mean he will go without a rehab assignment.
The Giants are 2.5 months through the season, and Verlander still does not have a win. Overall, he has a 4.33 ERA, 4.76 FIP, 1.40 WHIP, 7.1 K/9, and a 1.95 SO/W rate in 10 outings. In some of his more recent outings, Verlander has departed with the lead, but the bullpen was unable to hold it. He remains stuck at 262 career wins.
2. Osleivis Basabe outrighted
Osleivis Basabe's waiver status was resolved on Monday. The versatile utility bat cleared waivers, and was outrighted to Sacramento. This was his first time clearing waivers, so he did not have a chance to reject a minor league assignment.
The Giants designated Basabe for assignment last week, when Patrick Bailey landed on the injured list. Catcher Logan Porter had to be added to the active roster, with Basabe being placed on waivers in a corresponding move.
The right-handed bat has registered a .242/.287/.352 line (68 wRC+) with four home runs and 20 RBI in 198 plate appearances with Sacramento. He will now return to Triple-A.
3. Rafael Devers' jersey number
For Rafael Devers' entire nine-year career, he has worn No. 11 with the Boston Red Sox. That number is retired by the Giants in recognition of Carl Hubbell's Hall of Fame career. Hubbell wore that number for most of his 16-year run with the New York Giants.
On Monday, the Giants revealed that Devers would wear No. 16. Jim Ray Hart, Édgar Rentería, and Ángel Pagán are among the former Giants players to wear that jersey number. You should be able to buy your jerseys soon.
