The SF Giants are scheduled to take on the Atlanta Braves on Thursday night but the weather forecast is not great. Here are some news updates or things you may have missed as of late as the Giants hope they get lucky with the weather.

SF Giants news nuggets you may have missed

Javier Lopez back in the booth

While former Giants reliever Javier Lopez joined the team’s front office in the offseason as an advisor to the baseball operations group, he is still able to call games for the team and made his 2026 broadcast debut with the team in the current series against the Atlanta Braves which makes sense since he lives in Atlanta.

Lopez has often been the color commentator for Giants road games in recent years when Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow don’t travel with the team.

He’s quickly become a favorite amongst fans for his wit and analysis so many were happy to hear his voice again. He will be on the call for the series against the Miami Marlins as well beginning on Friday night.

Brennan likely to stay put

The Giants were content to let outfielder Will Brennan go when they designated him for assignment last week, but no teams claimed him so he was outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento. He has the option to elect free agency but the expectation is he will accept his assignment to the minors.

Our own Jeff Young has noted that Brennan was an odd offseason acquisition since he is a glove-first left-handed outfielder which is the exact same profile of Drew Gilbert and Grant McCray, but at least the Giants will have a little more depth in case of injury.

Brennan has two hits in 23 at-bats this season so he has not done anything to shake his reputation as a below-average hitter even though he’s put up decent numbers in Triple-A.

Whisenhunt optioned

Left-handed pitcher Carson Whisenhunt pitched very well last night against the Atlanta Braves as he gave up two earned runs in five innings of work which was even more impressive since he was sleep-deprived after having to travel to Atlanta as the team’s 27th man for the quasi-doubleheader.

He was optioned back to Triple-A Sacramento after the game which is not surprising even though he pitched well. Yet, the Giants would be wise to call him up soon. Whether it comes after they trade one or multiple of their starters or if they finally decide to move Adrian Houser or Tyler Mahle to the bullpen, they should definitely give Whisenhunt a long look this season.
