SF Giants news: .500 road trip, Dylan Smith first save, Ryan Borucki released

1. Giants finish with a .500 road trip

The Giants finished the road trip with a .500 record across 10 games. They lost four of the first five games, and won four of the next five games. There is a case to be made that they should have won at least six of those games. Perhaps, they could have even won seven games, but the bullpen blew the lead late in a couple of games.

With a 27-39 overall record, the Giants are still buried in the standings. The schedule for the remainder of the month will not do them any favors. They face off against the Washington Nationals (three games), Chicago Cubs (three games), and Atlanta Braves (six games) this month. They finish off with a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks that carries over into July. They are still looking for their first win of the season against Arizona.

2. Dylan Smith records first career save

Dylan Smith helped close out the game to end the long road trip. He came into the 10th inning of a one-run game to record his first career save. It was only his fifth save as a pro.

The Giants acquired Smith at the start of the season from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for cash consideration. He throws from an over-the-top arm slot, and his arsenal features a mid 90's four-seam fastball and a mid 80's sweeper. Smith had thrown a splitter in the past, but he has scrapped that pitch this season.

The right-handed reliever has tallied three strikeouts with one walk in 2.2 frames with San Francisco. He has generally posted healthy strikeout numbers (9.9 K/9) and inflated walk totals (3.4 BB/9). Across five minor league seasons. Smith has a good enough track record in the minors that it would behoove the Giants to give him a longer look.

3. Ryan Borucki released

According to the team's transaction log, veteran reliever Ryan Borucki was released. He was designated for assignment at the end of May to make room for speedy outfielder Jonah Cox.

Borucki joined the Giants right before the season began. They hoped that he could fill in as a situational lefty out of the bullpen. He had strong platoon splits against left-handed hitters, but struggled badly against right-handed hitters. That continued to play out in 2026, and he was ineffective in the few leverage spots he pitched. Overall, he pitched to a 4.94 ERA in 21 appearances for San Francisco.
