The SF Giants have hit a grand slam in all three stops of their three-city road trip, marking the third time that has happened since 1901, per Justice delos Santos of The Mercury News. Incredibly, new third base coach Gary Pettis was a part of all three teams to accomplish that feat.
Pettis joined the Giants as the club’s new third base coach last week. He took over for Hector Borg, who was reassigned to a player development role.
In the interim, Ron Wotus filled in as the third base coach last weekend. It is fair to wonder if he would be interested in taking over the reins if the Giants’ poor season continues.
The Giants needed to make a change to the coaching staff. There were too many poor calls from Borg as the third base coach, but the team’s struggles extend beyond just one person. It has been an organizational failure.
New SF Giants coach Gary Pettis brings his good luck to the lineup
To take Borg’s place, the Giants went with an experienced coach. Gary Pettis is a baseball lifer. He played in the majors for 11 seasons, and has been a coach for the better part of the past 30 years.
Pettis is a familiar face for a lot of reasons. He grew up in the Bay Area and attended Laney College before being taken in the sixth round of the 1979 draft by the Los Angeles Angels. His son, Dante, was a second-round pick by the San Francisco Forty Niners and played in parts of three seasons with them before being traded to the New York Giants in 2020.
The longtime coach also crossed over with Ron Washington and Dusty Baker when they managed the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros, respectively. For a lot of reasons, Pettis made sense for the Giants.
Pettis has brought his good luck to the Giants’ lineup. The Giants have hit a grand slam in all three stops of this road trip. Oddly enough, they lead the league in grand slams now.
The last two teams to accomplish that same feat were the 2023 Houston Astros and the 1983 Angels. Pettis was a third base coach for the Astros in 2023 and in his second season with the Angels in 1983. As Justice delos Santos notes, Pettis had not made his season debut with the Angels yet, but eventually played for the club.
Willy Adames hit a grand slam in Colorado, followed by Eric Haase in Milwaukee. Matt Chapman tallied a grand slam on Friday in the first game of a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs. He was one of three Giants hitters to have a multi-homer effort in the 18-3 victory. The others were Adames and Casey Schmitt.
