SF Giants middle infield prospect Nate Furman has thrived since returning from the injured list in June. On Tuesday, he was recognized as the Northwest League Player of the Week from August 25 - August 31, per a team announcement.

The Giants acquired Furman, along with Jacob Bresnahan, last summer in a deal that sent Alex Cobb to the Cleveland Guardians. Cobb had not thrown up until that point, and made three starts for Cleveland down the stretch.

On the other hand, Bresnahan has established himself as one of the better pitching prospects in the organization. Since May, he has pitched to a 2.13 ERA with 95 strikeouts and 35 walks in 71.2 innings with the San Jose Giants.

On the other hand, Furman did not make his organizational debut until midway through this season. His player page lists him as on the Richmond Flying Squirrels, but on a rehab assignment with the Eugene Emeralds.

If this is still considered a rehab assignment, it has been a lengthy one at 21 games. That said, the Emeralds have been the best team in the Northwest League in the second half of the season due to the production of players like Furman, Parks Harber, and Charlie Szykowny.

Overall, Furman is hitting .364/.490/.649 (209 wRC+) with six home runs, 15 RBI, and 22 runs in 96 plate appearances in Eugene. He was even better than that in a six-game series against the Everett AquaSox last week.

The Emeralds talled five wins in that series, and the left-handed bat led the way. He had 11 hits, including five home runs, with 11 RBI in 32 plate appearances. Incredibly, he did not record a strikeout, but walked seven times.

Despite the power output last week, Furman's swing is geared more toward contact and line drives. He does have a pull-heavy approach, but can use the rest of the field when needed. Furman sees a lot of pitches, works the count, and does not strike out much. These are skills that the current front office covets in a player.

With two weeks remaining in Richmond's schedule, Furman was reassigned to Richmond to finish out the year. Given that he missed a lot of time earlier this season, he is also a good candidate to receive an assignment to the Arizona Fall League next month. Furman is eligible for the Rule 5 draft this winter, so there is a chance that the Giants add him to the 40-man roster.
