SF Giants may land shortstop (but not the one Buster Posey really wants) in 2026 MLB Draft

Maybe he will have to settle.

One of the hottest rumors surrounding the SF Giants and the 2026 MLB Draft has to do with the team’s interest in shortstop Roch Cholowsky. Many expect Cholowsky to go No. 1 overall to the Chicago White Sox but the Giants seem to think there’s a chance he will fall to them at No. 4 overall.

Draft experts like Jim Callis have a hard time seeing that happen though so it may be more wishful thinking, or maybe even an act of desperation, on the part of president of baseball operations Buster Posey.

The latest round of mock drafts do have the Giants land a shortstop at No. 4 overall, just not the one Posey is hoping for.

Jacob Lombard may be San Francisco's Plan B in 2026 MLB Draft

ESPN’s latest mock draft has the Giants selecting Jacob Lombard out of Gulliver Prep High School in Florida. So does FanSided’s latest mock draft. While right-handed pitcher Jackson Flora was a popular prediction for the Giants a month or two ago, it seems the consensus is shifting a little bit although the ESPN projection still leaves room for them to select Flora or Eric Booth Jr.

Lombard would be an interesting choice. It’s always a little risky to select a player fresh out of high school. He’s seen as a guy who has a lot of pop in his bat and he’s got baseball in his blood as his brother is a rising prospect in the New York Yankees organization and his father also played in the big leagues.

The Giants do already have a ton of shortstop talent in the organization as it is so it would be a little surprising if they added yet another one into the mix unless their dream scenario comes true and Cholowsky is available at No. 4.

From Josuar Gonzalez, who may be the top prospect in baseball soon, to Luis Hernandez, Jhonny Level, and Gavin Kilen the Giants have a ton of talent up the middle in their farm system. Maybe adding Lombard to that group would make for even more strength and could allow the Giants to trade from that depth, but there’s a case to be made that they should strengthen other areas.

It’s no secret that the Giants are big fans of Cholowsky so that seems to be Plan A, but maybe Lombard will end up being Posey’s Plan B if they deem him the best option available at No. 4.
