This would be a very welcome development.

Keith Law of The Athletic recently released his updated ranking of the top 50 prospects in MLB. SF Giants shortstop Josuar Gonzalez has climbed up to No. 7 overall on his rankings and Giants insider Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area predicted that Gonzalez could end up being the top prospect in baseball within a year.

Here is what Pavlovic wrote on social media in response to Law’s updated rankings: “There’s a pretty decent chance Josuar is considered the top prospect in baseball at some point in the next year. He has the profile for it, and a lot of those guys around him will graduate.”

That would certainly be a welcome development for a Giants organization that has been desperately trying to improve its farm system for years. They have made steady progress so to have Gonzalez be considered the top prospect in baseball would show just how far the Giants have come as an organization.

Gonzalez was signed as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic back in 2025. He was only 17 years old at the time but had already impressed in the DR enough to be considered the second-best international prospect in his class after pitcher Roki Sasaki.

Last season in the Dominican Summer League Gonzalez hit .288/.404/.455 with four home runs, 24 runs batted in, and 33 stolen bases. He’s impressed even more this season in the Arizona Complex League as he’s hitting .421/.551/.658 with one home run and 11 runs batted in.

He’s a switch-hitting shortstop and that has led to comparisons from the experts to players like Francisco Lindor and Jose Reyes. He’s just 18 so it will be a while before he turns into one of those guys but it’s still very encouraging to say the least.

Josuar Gonzalez is not the only prospect SF Giants fans should be excited about

The Giants are becoming a bit spoiled with all of the promising young shortstop talent they have in the organization. After Gonzalez, Luis Hernandez has been incredibly impressive in the ACL as well after the Giants signed him as the top international free agent earlier this season.

There’s also Jhonny Level who seemingly hits a home run every game with the San Jose Giants and 2025 first-round draft pick Gavin Kilen who is doing really impressive things with the Eugene Emeralds.

The promise in the minors has been the one silver lining to a pretty dreadful year for the Giants at the big league level. Even if the Giants end the year well under .500, a promising farm system headlined by Gonzalez could be enough to give fans at least a shred of hope for the future.
