SF Giants may be saving manager Bob Melvin's job with recent play

They have turned things around in a big way.

Just a week or two ago, the conversation surrounding SF Giants manager Bob Melvin was over whether he should be fired. That talk has quieted down a bit thanks to the team’s recent play.

San Francisco took two games out of three against the Milwaukee Brewers, the holders of the best record in baseball, and followed that up with a three-game sweep of the Chicago Cubs, a team headed for the postseason as well.

SF Giants are showing signs of life which is huge for Bob Melvin

It is simultaneously encouraging and maddening to watch the Giants play like this. Encouraging because they did not completely roll over like a dead fish after the months of largely uninspired baseball they have played. Maddening because this is the exact type of baseball they were playing early in the year, so we know they have been capable of being a good team, they just have been grossly underperforming for a good chunk of the year.

Melvin’s job security is still going to remain a topic of conversation throughout the rest of the season. Even if he keeps his job, his coaching staff seems likely to see some changes with how poor the team has looked at times this year.

Still, to Melvin and his staff’s credit the team has clearly not completely given up. Guys are still fighting and trying hard out there and the results are showing as of late.

Plus, players have been vocal in their support of Melvin so it definitely does not seem like a lot of players would like to see him go.

It is still not hard to daydream about other managers coming in and fixing everything for the Giants in a perfect scenario. But president of baseball operations Buster Posey almost certainly does not want to make a change at manager unless he absolutely has to.

Notably, he did not address the coaching staff in a recent interview he gave about the team’s struggles. That does not mean Melvin is out, but it likely means Posey and the front office are actively evaluating everything as they try to diagnose what went wrong this season and who is to blame.

If the Giants remain on their current course and continue to win games and play clean baseball, maybe finishing the year around .500, then Melvin will probably stay. There is still plenty of time for the team to revert back to the poor baseball they played for several months though, so nothing is set in stone.
