SF Giants injury updates have massive implications for trade deadline, 2027, and beyond

The SF Giants got some very important injury updates on Tuesday. All three will have implications for the trade deadline, next season, and beyond.

Injuries are obviously important the entire season but they take on added importance this time of year as teams are looking to make deadline trades. Let’s look at how all three of these injury updates will impact the Giants in the short and long term.

The immediate and future impact of SF Giants injuries

Harrison Bader

Veteran outfielder Harrison Bader hasn’t played since late May due to a foot injury. That issue got even worse after he apparently injured it further in a recent scooter accident.

What is it with the Giants and scooters? Fans will remember how Hunter Pence’s scooter that he rode to games got stolen when he was a player. Something about those wretched machines is cursed. 

It wouldn’t be a shock if Bader doesn’t play the rest of the season and this scooter snafu likely shuts the door on whatever slim hope the Giants may have had for trading him ahead of the deadline.

If he was healthy or nearing a return they probably could have dealt him to a team desperate for outfield help. Now the Giants are stuck with him and will be on the hook for his $13 million salary next season which is not ideal to say the least.

Maybe the Giants will be able to offload him in the offseason but they’d certainly have to eat some money to make that happen. 

Trevor McDonald

Young starting pitcher Trevor McDonald had to leave his most recent start due to an elbow issue and everyone’s worst fears were realized when it was announced that he would undergo UCL reconstruction surgery.

It’s a shame because McDonald showed promise this season. His 5.12 ERA is not all that impressive but his second-to-last start shows his promise as he went seven innings while only giving up one earned run.

He was definitely trending towards being in the mix for a rotation spot next season but maybe his injury compels San Francisco to make a trade in the coming days for a pitcher like Emerson Hancock so they can give next year’s rotation a boost.

Other young arms like Carson Whisenhunt and Blade Tidwell should get more of a shot now but maybe this changes San Francisco’s plans for the rotation in 2027.

Casey Schmitt

Casey Schmitt’s meniscus tear will probably shut the door on any chance he gets traded in the coming days but it opens up new questions. Do the Giants see him as the second baseman of the future? Does his injury open the door to Luis Arraez sticking around or possibly being traded only to be re-signed in free agency?

All of these injuries are going to impact the Giants in the short term with the deadline nearing but the effects could be far-reaching if they force San Francisco to make any big moves.
