5 players SF Giants are almost certain to be stuck with after the trade deadline

The SF Giants enter the August 3 MLB trade deadline with it being pretty clear that they have few, if any, untouchables in trade talks. The team should be open to trading just about anyone but that does not mean they will trade all the guys they'd like to.

There are a number of players on the roster who, whether because of injury, their contract situation, or in some cases both, will be incredibly hard to trade. That’s why it seems very likely the Giants will be stuck with these five players after the deadline.

5 players Giants will struggle to move at trade deadline

Harrison Bader

Even if veteran outfielder Harrison Bader was healthy, it would be hard for the Giants to trade him given the way he’s underperformed at the plate this season. But the fact that he hasn’t played since late May and is now going to see a specialist for his foot issue means it will be really hard to trade him in the next week.

Who really wants a 32-year-old who is hitting .170/.198/.358 on the season, has only played in 30 games, and is owed $13 million next season? Unless the Giants agree to pay basically all of his remaining contract, it’s hard to see how they will be able to get rid of him ahead of the deadline.

Adrian Houser

The Giants gave Adrian Houser a two-year, $22 million contract in the offseason hoping he’d be an effective starter. He wasn’t, and now he’s a long reliever in the bullpen with a 5.10 ERA on the season who is owed $11 million next season.

This is yet another situation where the Giants would have to pay his salary down if they want to move him but it’s doubtful that he’ll have a ton of takers.

Matt Chapman, Willy Adames, and Rafael Devers

While the Giants have reportedly received calls on all three of their “big three” contracts, it still just doesn’t seem likely that they’ll be able to offload any of these guys. Chapman is still working his way back from injury and has underperformed on the year. Adames has been bad defensively and offensively. Devers has been the best of the bunch but his contract goes the longest of the three.

Add in the complications of Chapman and Adames having no-trade clauses in their contracts and that any deal would involve the Giants eating a ton of money and it’s just hard to see how they will be able to get rid of any of these guys.

Maybe Buster Posey and the front office is really motivated to have some sort of reset though. If they really work the phones and want to get rid of these players at any cost they can do it, but it’s not going to be easy and in many ways it will be quite painful.

Realistically, the fact that all of these guys are underperforming based on the contracts they signed with San Francisco is why they will all probably still be in orange and black in the second half of the season.
