Mariners just opened a trade avenue SF Giants absolutely have to go down

The SF Giants are going to be connected to a lot of trade rumors in the coming weeks. One team that they’ve been connected to is the Seattle Mariners, a team that reportedly had scouts at a recent Giants game, and Seattle is apparently open to trading a pitcher the Giants should be all over.

Seattle is reportedly willing to trade right-hander Emerson Hancock. Seattle has a surplus of starters and they appear willing to trade from that depth to address other areas of need on the roster.

The 27-year-old Hancock has a 3.16 ERA on the season in 19 starts. He has 97 strikeouts and 26 walks in 105 innings pitched. This is the best season of his career so far as his numbers were okay, but not great, prior to 2026. From 2023 to 2025 he had a 4.81 ERA in 163 innings pitched.

He’d be a solid No. 3 or No. 4 option in San Francisco’s rotation and the best part is he won’t be a free agent until after the 2030 season. We know the Giants don’t like to pay quality arms so they might as well trade for one especially since the only two rotation arms the team can reasonably count on next year are Logan Webb and Landen Roupp.

What would Giants have to give up to get Hancock from Mariners?

The real question is what it would take to land Hancock? Third base is a need for Seattle so maybe the Mariners would want Matt Chapman or Casey Schmitt. Obviously trading Chapman would require sending some cash in the deal since he’s owed so much money but it might be a nice way to offload his contract.

Other Mariners starters could make sense in a trade with San Francisco though. Jim Bowden recently proposed a mock trade that would send Schmitt and Erik Miller in exchange for George Kirby. Luis Castillo is another option and he could make sense if the Giants wanted to do more of a salary swap trade in exchange for Chapman.

The Giants would be smart to target guys like Hancock at the deadline. Prospects are all well and good but if they can get at least a couple players who have shown some aptitude at the big league level that could go a long way.

San Francisco and Seattle have swung a number of trades in the past so if the Mariners are indeed shopping Hancock the Giants should absolutely try to go after him.
