Everyone knows the SF Giants are going to sell at the trade deadline, but what if they decide to shock the world and actually be aggressive? This wouldn’t mean holding onto Luis Arraez and Robbie Ray in order to make some historic charge to the playoffs in the second half, instead this would involve making trades to improve the 2027 team by strengthening the rotation.

It would not be the worst strategy considering there is almost certainly going to be a lockout in the offseason which means the Giants probably won’t be able to make moves for months.

Why not see if they can poach any players who are under contract for 2027 and would actually help improve the team? There are three starting pitchers who would do just that.

3 wild trades if the Giants decide to do a little buying at the trade deadline

Joe Ryan

Trading for Joe Ryan has been a pipe dream for Giants fans for some time now given the fact he’s a San Francisco native. Fans would really be clamoring for it if the team was in contention but now may actually be a sneakily perfect time to trade for him.

The Minnesota Twins are three games back in the American League Central so they are certainly thinking about the playoffs, but Ryan is going to be a free agent after the 2027 season. He has a 2.85 ERA on the year and just made his second straight All-Star Game so he’s going to secure himself a very nice contract.

The Twins probably want to trade him at some point unless they plan on extending him and the Giants could be in a great spot to do so. What about a package that sent Robbie Ray and Casey Schmitt to Minnesota in exchange for Ryan?

That would give Minnesota a solid starter the rest of this season for their playoff hunt and also a guy who is having a breakout year and should have been an All-Star.

Is it likely? Probably not, but maybe the Giants could finally get Ryan when it is least expected.

Luis Castillo

Another pitcher who has long been rumored as a Giants trade target is Seattle Mariners righty Luis Castillo. He was once in the Giants organization and was traded in the Casey McGehee trade back in 2015.

The Mariners are reportedly looking to offload one of their starters and Castillo is having a bit of a down year with a 4.93 ERA. He’s not set to be a free agent until after 2028 so he could be another guy who they have for at least a few years before he is back on the market.

Sonny Gray

There was speculation that the Giants may try to trade for Sonny Gray last offseason but he ended up being dealt to the Boston Red Sox. He has a 2.54 ERA this season and word is the Red Sox may sell at the deadline. Gray is under contract through 2027 maybe the Giants could at least get Webb a co-ace for next season.

These would all be very aggressive trades and there’s a case to be made for trading Ray and Tyler Mahle and then letting the rest of the rotation spots go to younger guys. But we know the Giants don’t spend on pitching so now could be the time to swoop in and trade for guys who could really give the rotation a boost in 2027.
