With all of the no-name players the SF Giants are currently having to trot out on the big league roster due to the injuries and trade deadline exodus, one could make a real argument that the most exciting team to watch in the Bay Area right now is the San Jose Giants.

Josuar Gonzalez and Luis Hernandez, the two top prospects in the organization, have been putting on a show in San Jose and are making the future look very bright. One play in a recent game encapsulated that as Gonzalez scored from first on a single by Hernandez.

Gonzalez was stealing on the pitch and Hernandez executed a brilliant hit and run by taking the ball the other way to where the second baseman would have been had he not had to cover second base. That gave Gonzalez a chance to flash his blazing speed and with the two of them combining to do things like that it’s hard not to get excited about the future.

Of course, this must come with the obligatory reminder that they are both teenagers. Gonzalez is 18 years old and Hernandez is 17 so it would be irrational to assume both are going to take a linear path to the big leagues.

We’ve seen too many promising young international signings like Marco Luciano and Luis Matos fail to pan out to believe that Gonzalez and Hernandez are absolutely going to succeed.

Josuar Gonzalez has been especially impressive for San Jose Giants

Gonzalez has been particularly impressive thus far. He’s hitting .321/.443/.571 with two home runs and 14 runs batted in. He’s also struck out 14 times while walking 12 times which is an impressive strikeout-to-walk ratio for such a young hitter.

Hernandez’s numbers aren’t quite as strong which makes sense since he’s a little younger. It’s impressive that he’s even playing in Single-A so early and it’s not like his numbers are awful. He’s hitting .250/.301/.355 with two homers and nine runs batted in.

These two guys may be the most exciting thing to watch next year especially if the big league season gets delayed due to the lockout. Minor league teams should still be able to play so the progression of both Gonzalez and Hernandez will be really fun to watch.

We have to be careful to not let our expectations run too wild, but it’s okay to dream about the future and those two guys are definitely giving fans a lot to dream about down in San Jose.
