The SF Giants are going to be involved in the pitching market this offseason, and one big name may have just become available. Cincinnati Reds ace Hunter Greene may be available in trade talks based on recent rumors.
The flamethrower has been an excellent pitcher the past few seasons and would instantly upgrade San Francisco’s rotation in a big way. In 2025 he had a 2.76 ERA in 19 starts and struck out 132 batters in 107 and 2/3 innings pitched.
SF Giants should look into a trade for Hunter Greene
This was a continuation of the numbers he put up in 2024 when he made the NL All-Star team and had a 2.75 ERA in 26 starts.
At the age of 26, he is one of the most promising young arms in baseball and would give the Giants a co-ace at the top of the rotation alongside Logan Webb.
His fastball averages around 99 miles per hour which is ridiculous for a starting pitcher. He brings absolute gas to the table and would be the hardest-throwing Giants starter in recent memory.
Of course, the Reds are not going to part ways with him for cheap. They are likely going to demand some key prospects or big-league ready players in any sort of trade so the Giants would have to be willing to pony up.
Top prospect Bryce Eldridge is almost certainly off the table in any trade talks, but maybe the Giants would be willing to part ways with their top pitching prospect Carson Whisenhunt. The lefty showed some promise but was inconsistent in his brief few starts with the Giants in 2025.
Maybe the Giants could also include someone like Heliot Ramos in a potential trade. He has proven to be a solid offensive contributor these last two seasons, but his defense definitely leaves a lot to be desired so maybe the Reds could utilize him as more of a designated hitter.
The trade market could represent San Francisco’s best chance to upgrade the rotation in a major way. The team has been reluctant to hand out huge contracts to free agent pitchers, so maybe swinging a trade for an ace on a relatively affordable contract who will not hit free agency until either 2029 or 2030 is the right move.
The Giants would have to be smart and the front office should not give up too much to land Greene, but the prospect of adding such an electric arm to the rotation is an enticing one. At the very least, president of baseball operations Buster Posey should be on the phone with the Reds this offseason to kick the tires on a potential deal.
