SF Giants avoided the worst on Bo Davidson injury, but don't expect a promotion

If you have been following the Sacramento River Cats as of late, you know that outfielder Bo Davidson has been doing everything in his power to earn a promotion to the SF Giants. Unfortunately, he went down with an injury recently but thankfully it seems as if he avoided a major one.

Davidson fouled a ball off his ankle which left him in a great deal of pain and he had to be helped off the field. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that Davidson has a contusion and is currently considered day-to-day.

That's good news. Daniel Susac showed us how fouling a ball off your leg can end your season so at least Davidson should be able to come back this season. Even if he was healthy though, he probably wouldn't have been promoted to the big league team.

It's hard to think what more he could have done to earn a spot. He's hitting .301/.380/.527 with nine homers and 37 runs batted in. He has 28 homers on the season between Sacramento and Richmond.

Davidson has to be added to the 40-man roster in the offseason to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft which seems like an obvious decision. The Giants don't want another team to poach him so they will have to make room for him, and plenty of other players, on the 40-man roster after the season.

It would've made some sense to get a look at him in the big leagues. They could have DFA'd Grant McCray and given Davidson the at-bats he was getting, but even if they had done that it would've been hard to get Davidson consistent at-bats.

The Giants already have a lot of left-handed hitting outfielders on the roster without Davidson. Turner Hill, Drew Gilbert, and Jung Hoo Lee are all going to get a lot of playing time, plus the Giants will also have to make room for Victor Bericoto who is currently on a rehab assignment.

They just have too many outfielders right now as Grant Brisbee pointed out so there isn't enough room for Davidson whether he was healthy or not. The ankle contusion likely ends whatever slim chance he might have had at making the roster if there was an injury or something as the Giants would be wise to just take it easy with him the rest of the year. The Giants only have 14 games left this season anyway so it's probably not even worth it to call him up this late.

We should see Davidson on the big league team next year, especially if the team decides to just roll with the young guys in the outfield. He likely won't get to make his big league debut this year as many fans wanted but that is probably smart in light of the ankle injury.
