3 realistic September call-ups SF Giants can make, 2 we wish that they would

September is almost here, and while for SF Giants fans that likely means Green Day’s “Wake Me Up When September Ends” will be on repeat, for Giants prospects it means that they may get to make their big league debut pretty soon since rosters will expand from 26 to 28. The Giants have already been calling other rookies up to make their debuts and in this lost season, the only thing that matters is getting some young guys a look.

Things are complicated a bit by the looming lockout, but we should still expect to see some fresh faces in the big leagues soon although not all of the most exciting prospects will get called up.

Let’s dive into three prospects who we can realistically expect to see in September.

3 SF Giants prospects who will realistically be promoted in September

Scott Bandura

25-year-old outfielder Scott Bandura has had a very good year in the minors. He’s hitting .323/.406/.482 on the season with 11 home runs and 89 runs batted in. He’s also stolen 32 bases.

Bandura is eligible for the Rule 5 Draft this offseason so if the Giants want to protect they might as well add him to the 40-man roster and get a look at him first. Grant McCray has not done enough to warrant continued playing time so it may be time to move on from him.

Bo Davidson 

Similarly, outfielder Bo Davidson is eligible for the Rule 5 Draft and he’s considered one of the better prospects in the organization. The 24-year-old is hitting .281/.352/.507 25 homers and 80 runs batted in. He has a ton of power so the Giants would be wise to get him a look in the big leagues although he wouldn’t be able to play in the minors next year during a MLB lockout. Still, the Giants wouldn’t want to allow another team to scoop him up.

Philip Abner

While calling Philip Abner a prospect isn’t quite accurate, he’s still just 24 and the Hiants just scooped him up off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Abner has a 4.89 ERA on the year in the minors and a 6.28 ERA in the big leagues. He’s already on the 40-man roster so odds are he will get called up and get a chance to audition for next year’s bullpen at some point.

2 Giants prospects we probably won’t see in September

Parks Harber

While the Giants could certainly use another right-handed hitting bat on the roster right now, don’t expect Parks Harber to be called up since he is not Rule 5 Draft eligible so there is no need to add him to the 40-man roster just yet.

Based on performance alone though he probably does deserve a call-up as he’s hitting .287/.374/.491 with 17 home runs and 73 runs batted in on the season.

Gavin Kilen

Drafted in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft out of the University of Tennessee, Kilen has been playing really well in the minors this season. He’s hitting .289/.351/.463 with 10 homers and 81 runs batted in and is currently in Double-A Richmond.

With all of the injuries in the infield it would be fun to call him up and get him a taste of the big leagues especially since he played under manager Tony Vitello in Knoxville, but he’s only 22 so there’s no need to rush him.

Expect to see some young blood in September, but we probably won’t get to see every young prospect we’d like to see. It isn’t spring training even if it may feel like it based on the lineups the Giants are trotting out right now.
