SF Giants may find out if they won the Mike Yastrzemski trade very soon

It’s the perfect year for the SF Giants to get a look at some of their younger players. They’ve already called up plenty of interesting young prospects like Turner Hill and Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson. Now, it seems like they’re going to call up the prospect acquired in the Mike Yastrzemski trade last year.

The Giants dealt Yastrzemski to the Kansas City Royals at the trade deadline last year in exchange for right-handed pitcher Yunior Marte. Justice delos Santos of the San Jose Mercury News reported that Marte had a locker at Oracle Park on Friday and warmed up with the team’s relievers.

As of this writing, a roster move has not officially been made but it seems like Marte is going to be added to the roster fairly soon. This makes sense since Marte was promoted to Double-A and he has performed quite well. He sports a 3.85 ERA on the year between Double-A and High-A and is eligible for the Rule 5 Draft after this season so the Giants need to decide if they want to protect him by having him on the 40-man roster.

Editor's note: After the writing of this article, the Giants announced that pitcher Seth Lonsway was called up from Triple-A, but it still seems like there is a decent chance Marte will get called up when rosters expand in September.

The nice thing is that the Giants can’t really lose the Yastrzemski trade. It made sense to trade him because he was a pending free agent and the Giants were in a downward spiral going into the trade deadline last season.

But the Royals didn’t make the playoffs thanks to Yastrzemski and he ended up signing a nice contract with the Atlanta Braves so as of right now, Mike Yastrzemski seems to be the biggest winner of the trade personally.

Even if Marte doesn’t pan out, it’s not like the Giants lost out on anything by taking a chance on a young pitcher when they knew they probably wouldn’t be bringing Yastrzemski back anyway.

With all of the injuries to the pitching staff, the Giants might as well give young arms like Marte a chance. He’s been a starter down in the minors but the Giants will probably use him as a reliever just so they have a fresher arm to eat up some innings.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Marte fares in the big leagues though. He’s got a great opportunity to prove himself at the end of this brutal year with a completely depleted pitching staff so the Giants will probably find out in the next month whether they won the Mike Yastrzemski trade or if it was simply a draw.
