SF Giants already look like early winner of Patrick Bailey trade with Guardians

They have to feel good about this deal.

It’s a bit of a train wreck right now in the big leagues for the SF Giants so one could be forgive for turning away. Fans may find some hope in the minor leagues where Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson was reportedly just promoted to Triple-A Sacramento per Chase Ford of MiLB Central as he tugs his way closer to his big league debut.

The Giants acquired Wilkinson in a trade with the Cleveland Guardians that sent catcher Patrick Bailey to Cleveland in exchange for Wilkinson and the No. 29 overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft.

It’s a trade that looks pretty good for the Giants as Bailey has hit poorly to the tune of a .148/.200/.333 slash line since joining the Guardians. Bailey of course provides most of his value on defense but it will be tough for him to make up for how much of an offensive liability he is. Meanwhile, Wilkinson has pitched really well in Double-A Richmond and is reportedly on his way to the next level.

Wilkinson looks like he could debut with Giants this season

Wilkinson made just three starts with the Flying Squirrels and looked really good with a 3.00 ERA in 15 innings pitched with 13 strikeouts and four walks. It may feel a bit premature to promote him to Triple-A but he is 23 years old and was pitching really well in Double-A while he was in Cleveland’s organization so this feels like the right move.

If he continues to pitch well in Triple-A for the River Cats then it wouldn’t be a shock to see him promoted sometime this season. With the way this year is going for the Giants, it really wouldn’t be a shock if they traded away Robbie Ray and Tyler Mahle, heck maybe even Logan Webb and Adrian Houser too, and were left with multiple holes in the rotation in the second half.

Those holes could be filled by guys like Wilkinson, Carson Whisenhunt, and Carson Seymour which would make for a young, fun rotation that would be more exciting to watch in the second half than the likes of Mahle and Houser.

Wilkinson is a portly left-hander who doesn’t boast incredible fastball velocity but he has good command and enough deception in his delivery to fool hitters. He may not be a guy who can blow hitters away, but he gets it done his own way.

In what has been a terrible season so far, fans could get behind cheering for a dude nicknamed “Tugboat” in some meaningless September game so at this point as long as he stays healthy the Giants probably should promote him at some point this year.

If Wilkinson can develop into a legitimate big league arm then the Bailey trade will look like an absolute fleece for San Francisco.
