Spring Breakout is a new program put on by Major League Baseball to showcase some of the best prospects in the game. All 30 teams will be participating in this and the SF Giants have put together a roster that is headlined by its 2023 draft class.

There will be 16 games in total that take place from March 14 through March 17. Baseball has traditionally done a poor job of marketing its younger players, so this feels like a small step in the right direction.

On Thursday, the Giants announced a Spring Breakout roster that features several of their top picks from the 2023 draft. This includes Joe Whitman, Josh Bostick, Bryce Eldridge, Walker Martin, Maui Ahuna, and Cole Foster. The Giants also acquired a 2023 draftee in Jonah Cox when they shipped Ross Stripling to the Oakland A's.

Eldridge might be the most notable name from the group given that he was a first round pick and has quickly risen up the prospect rankings despite a relatively brief pro career thus far. However, this will be the first look that Giants fans have at Martin and Ahuna. Neither prospect has officially debuted as a pro yet.

On a different note, Hunter Bishop and Carson Ragsdale will be a part of that team. Bishop has missed considerable time since being selected in the first round of the 2019 draft. This includes missing the entire 2023 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. The same is true for Ragsdale who underwent thoracic outlet syndrome surgery in 2022 and dealt with a bout of forearm/elbow soreness last season. The hope is that this is a sign that both players will be healthy to start the season.

The Giants also invited Hayden Birdsong, Landen Roupp, Rayner Arias, Grant McCray, and Diego Velasquez. Birdsong and Roupp could help the Giants as soon as this season, whereas Arias, McCray, and Velasquez are further away in terms of development.

This will be a good opportunity for the prospects to compete against some of the game's top prospects before the season begins. It will also be an equally good opportunity for fans to become more familiar with their team's farm system.
