It was not that long ago that SF Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow thought Bryce Eldridge should be sent down to Triple-A. Krukow felt he was not quite ready for the big leagues and should be getting more regular at-bats down in Triple-A, but now he has suddenly changed his tune.
Krukow said the following in a recent KNBR appearance about Eldridge:
“There was a time where I thought he should have been sent down, but I certainly don’t feel that way now. His at-bats have been fantastic… I don’t think he’s ever going back down.”
That’s quite the turnaround from his previous position, but it shows that Krukow has really been impressed with Eldridge at the plate. The surface-level numbers for the rookie still aren’t great as Eldridge is hitting just .170/.264/.277 on the season with one home run and two runs batted in.
Still, he often hits the snot out of the ball when he makes contact and had one of his more impressive games of the season on Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks even though he went 1-for-4 at the plate.
Eldridge is proving to Giants he can hit both lefties and righties
Eldridge got a start against left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez in that game which is rare because Eldridge hasn’t seen too much action against left-handed pitching this season. In his first at-bat against Rodriguez he smoked an inside pitch down the right field line for a double.
That swing was doubly impressive because the scouting report on Eldridge has been to attack him inside and he has adjusted and gotten to that ball on the inside part of the plate. His lone home run this season also came on an inside pitch.
The fact that it came against a lefty only strengthens Eldridge’s argument to get more and more playing time. He is in the lineup most days but there is still a segment of the fanbase that melts down online when he’s not in the lineup.
With the team 12 games under .500 and it looking increasingly like this is a lost season, Eldridge probably should be in there just about every day but the Giants are still in a weird spot where they aren’t going to regularly bench Matt Chapman or Willy Adames, but by moving Casey Schmitt to left field that has at least created more room for Eldridge in the lineup.
If Krukow has come around that shows that Eldridge has turned a skeptic into a believer. Eldridge probably should stay up the rest of this season so he can get more experience and at least one good thing can come of this dreadful year.
