Logan Webb's bizarre social media meltdown shows how dark things are for SF Giants

So this is what it has come to.

The SF Giants got whooped by the Toronto Blue Jays and were nearly no-hit by Dylan Cease in a 10-0 rout on Wednesday. Logan Webb had another rough start but things didn’t get any better after the game as he took to social media to go to war with some fans and folks in the media.

Webb has done this before. He has not been afraid to take some shots on social media in the past. Usually it’s pretty funny and harmless, but the team got embarrassed and is now 16 games under .500 and Webb decided to go after Jack Loder of KNBR by saying it’s “sad” people like him are let in the locker room in response to a video from Loder criticizing Webb. It’s not the greatest look in the world.

That wasn't the end of it though as Webb also got into it with some fans. Nothing he posted was entirely out of bounds. Several of his posts were just him agreeing with people saying he doesn’t deserve to be an All-Star. But he’s the leader of the team so for him to be engaging with random people on social media after a terrible loss is just a bit odd. Maybe someone got in his ear because his account is now deactivated which is probably a good move. There are no winners in social media spats.

Webb’s social media behavior just speaks to his frustration with how this season has gone and how dark a place the team is in. This season has just been so bad and there have been so many low moments. Giants fans grew so disgusted by mediocrity that we all forgot how bad really bad baseball can be and the Giants look like a throwback to the 2017-2019 version of the team.

Giants will likely shake things up at trade deadline

Just how much the Giants decide to shake things up with the trade deadline approaching change will be up to the front office but it would not be a surprise to see a very different Giants team in the second half of the season. Will Webb still be part of the picture? Most likely. His social media meltdown probably won’t have any bearing on whether the Giants are open to trading him but if they get an incredible offer, now may be the time to move on from him while his value is still quite high to contending teams in need of a starter.

Webb is still a great pitcher and is absolutely an ace. He’s been the best player on the Giants this decade and it’s not all that close. He does so many things well and it’s easy to want more out of him, especially when he has rough outings like the one on Wednesday, but it’s scary to think what the Giants would have looked like in recent years without Webb.

Webb should be cut a little slack for his meltdown. It’s not a great look but with how bad this season has gone players react in different ways. He’s upset, fans are upset, everyone’s upset. The bad news is that there’s still two and a half more months to go in this brutal season.

The frustration is boiling over and a lot of people in the clubhouse have to be ticked off. A lot of people in the entire organization have to be looking around wondering how this ship sank so quickly.

We can debate all the decisions and wrong turns that led to this moment but the people in charge have to lock in because the MLB Draft is this weekend and the trade deadline is in early August. Both of these events will give the Giants a chance to make good decisions that move the franchise in a positive direction going forward.
