Could the SF Giants initiate a rebuild by trading away Logan Webb. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (subscription required), the front office has "zero plans" to move Webb.

This is not to say that the Giants will not eventually part with Webb. It is more that they would need to be blown away by an offer.

Rosenthal notes that the Giants could look to move Matt Chapman, along with Luis Arráez and Robbie Ray. Chapman will be harder to move given that he is in the second year of a six-year deal. On the other hand, Arráez and Ray are on expiring deals.

Webb would certainly garner widespread interest in trade talks. He is in the third year of a five-year, $90 million pact. That contract went into effect during the 2024 season.

Currently, Webb's contract counts for $18 million against the luxury tax. However, if he were traded away, that amount would reset to reflect the guaranteed remaining money owed over the guaranteed remaining years. For Webb, that comes out to about $23.5 million. That number is still a relative bargain considering that he is in the prime of his career and has a strong track record in his favor.

If SF Giants do not trade Logan Webb, they need to build around him better

It is a shame that Webb's best years have also come during some lean years from the Giants. The veteran pitcher has been an All-Star in each of the past two seasons, and has earned Cy Young votes every year for the past four seasons.

If the Giants are going to keep Webb, they ought to do a better job of building a roster around him. He has objectively been one of the best pitchers of this decade. Often, the rotation has leaned too heavily on Webb, and yet, it is the same story every season. The Giants have had some good rotation parts, but not enough to be a true strength outside of Webb.

The 29-year-old pitcher got off to a slow start this year, but has been better since returning from the injured list. Overall, he has pitched to a 3.46 ERA in 12 starts.

The Giants may not be motivated to move Webb, and moving him would be a bitter pill for Giants fans to swallow. That type of move might also be the quickest way to bolster the farm system. It is a balancing act.
