The SF Giants have fired manager Bob Melvin and are now searching for a replacement. Some fans are hoping the Giants can somehow poach Stephen Vogt from the Cleveland Guardians, but that is simply not going to happen.
It is easy to understand why some Giants fans want Vogt. He has been great with Cleveland, leading them to AL Central titles in each of his first two seasons as manager of the Guardians even though they just lost in the Wild Card series to the Detroit Tigers.
There is no way the SF Giants will get Stephen Vogt as their manager
For those hoping this early bounce from the postseason will inspire Cleveland to move on from Vogt, or will make them more amenable to an exceptionally rare trade for a manager, that is just simply not going to happen. Vogt is proving himself to be one of the best young managers in the game and there is no way Cleveland would let him go.
The desire for Vogt is a reminder of the fact that the Giants made a mistake by choosing Bob Melvin over Vogt a couple years ago. They could have had him, but they opted for Melvin instead and we have seen fortunes change in Cleveland while mediocrity has remained in San Francisco.
With president of baseball operations Buster Posey ruling out a return for Bruce Bochy as manager, it seems the Giants may be trying to hire a younger manager more in the mold of someone like Vogt. That could lead them to Vogt's right-hand man in Cleveland, and a former coach in San Francisco under Gabe Kapler, Craig Albernaz.
It could also lead them to Nick Hundley who, like Vogt, was a former backup catcher to Posey with the Giants and would be a first-time manager.
The hope seems to be that these younger candidates could bring more energy to the team and give the team an extra boost that would prevent the summer collapse that the Giants had this past season.
There will be no shortage of candidates to assume the manager position in San Francisco. The Giants will be connected to a lot of names. However, no matter what fans want, Stephen Vogt is going to remain in Cleveland and will not be coming to save the Giants any time soon.
