Giants fans will laugh at new Camilo Doval quotes as Yankees struggles worsen

No one is buying what he's selling.

While the SF Giants’ bullpen has been a complete disaster this season, not many fans would go back and undo the trade from last year that sent Camilo Doval to the New York Yankees. Doval has really struggled in New York but his latest quote makes it sound like he’s as dominant as ever.

Speaking to reporters recently, Doval said, “In my career as a pitcher, I’ve never felt this good.” That confidence seems completely divorced from reality as Doval sports a 4.67 ERA on the season. That comes after the 4.82 he posted last year in the regular season after he was traded to New York.

Not only is Doval saying this, but his manager Aaron Boone seems to buy it as well, saying, "I know nobody likes hearing it, but he's been throwing the ball really well." Maybe they are doing some sort of psychological trick where they're trying to speak it into existence, but no one is falling for it.

To be fair, Doval’s numbers have been slightly better his last few outings. He has a 2.84 ERA in his last seven games but it’s not like he’s been dominant by any stretch. His last two outings he gave up no earned runs but allowed five hits in two innings of work so he’s not missing bats like he used to.

Giants fans remember when Doval was truly dominant. Back in 2022 and 2023 he was arguably one of the best closers in baseball and was even an All-Star in 2023. Relievers have a tendency of falling off though and Doval did just that in 2024 which earned him a demotion to the minors.

He rebounded in 2025 and even reclaimed his closer role but the Giants limped into the trade deadline and Doval was a perfect piece to sell to a contending team desperate for bullpen help.

Doval trade was a rare win for Giants' front office under Posey

Trading Doval was probably one of the best moves the front office has made under Buster Posey. A lot of the team’s moves have backfired but they got rid of Doval at the perfect time when his value was the highest before he began to decline.

That doesn’t change the fact that the front office did a terrible job of constructing the bullpen in the offseason. They went the cheap route and got a bunch of guys who were inexpensive or coming off injury, oftentimes both. The results speak for themselves and Sunday’s loss to the Colorado Rockies was yet another example of how that approach has completely backfired.

Maybe the Yankees will get rid of Doval at some point and then the Giants can scoop him up for cheap. That would be the irony of all ironies.

With how bad Doval has been though, it’s questionable whether he would even improve San Francisco’s bullpen all that much which says a lot no matter how good he says he feels on the mound.
