Well, we knew it was going to happen at some point. The SF Giants traded away their 2024 first-round pick James Tibbs III to the Boston Red Sox last year and he wound up with the Los Angeles Dodgers. In Friday's spring training matchup between the Giants and Dodgers, Tibbs already began to exact his revenge.
In the second inning of the contest, Tibbs hit a triple off Robbie Ray to drive in a run. It's obviously just an exhibition game in Scottsdale, but it was an impressive swing of the bat from the 23-year-old and may portend dark things to come.
SF Giants may get burned by giving away James Tibbs
To recap how everything went down, the Giants drafted Tibbs out of Florida State in the 2024 MLB Draft in the first round. He seemed like a promising young outfielder but when the Giants got the opportunity to land Rafael Devers last summer, they did not hesitate to include him in the deal.
The Red Sox were apparently not that high on him as they traded him to the Dodgers in a deal that brought back Dustin May. Farhan Zaidi was the guy who drafted Tibbs when he was still with the Giants in 2024, so it would not be a shock if he had a hand in getting the Dodgers to land him since he is back in LA's front office.
It did not take Tibbs long to start tearing it up in the Dodgers organization. He cooled off a bit, but his numbers in 36 games with LA's Double-A affiliate were pretty good as he slashed .269/.407/.493 with seven home runs and 32 runs batted in.
He is not going to make the Dodgers' Opening Day roster or anything, but it would not be a shock if he made his big league debut with the Dodgers sometime this season or next season.
If he does, fans almost have to expect him to do some damage against the Giants at some point. It just seems like guys like that always have a way of coming back to burn the Giants. Joey Bart had a revenge game against the Giants and Michael Conforto torched the Giants last year even though he was dreadful against pretty much every other team.
It's just spring training, but Tibbs may be giving us a taste of what he plans to do against the Giants if he ends up making it to the big leagues.
