Final months of season will decide whether SF Giants upgrade these positions

The SF Giants do not have a ton to play for the last month and a half of the season, but individual players will determine whether the front office is going to make a push to upgrade at second base and right field this offseason.

Outside of those two spots, it would not be a huge surprise if pretty much every other position on the diamond has the same primary starter as this year. Those are the two positions where the Giants are not really locked in with one player.

Two positions are up for grabs for SF Giants the rest of this season

At second base, the Giants have had several different players there throughout the year. Tyler Fitzgerald began the season as the starter coming off his breakout 2024 season, but with his struggles Casey Schmitt has stepped up and played very well at second base. He has been one of the few bright spots on the team as of late.

Another player who has impressed has been Christian Koss. With Matt Chapman going on the IL and Schmitt getting hit by yet another pitch, although he should be back soon, Koss has a great chance to prove that he belongs on next year's team.

There are not a ton of great free agent options at second base, so if Schmitt and Koss continue to look good the Giants may feel comfortable going into next season with Schmitt as the starter and Koss as a backup plan.

Right field has basically been an open audition ever since the Giants traded Mike Yastrzemski. Drew Gilbert, acquired in the Tyler Rogers trade, figured to get a lot of playing time but his struggles led to a weird experiment with Tyler Fitzgerald in right field and also Grant McCray who has not looked very good at all.

However, Gilbert hit his first career home run on Sunday and had an RBI single so maybe that will earn him more playing time going forward.

As of yet, the Giants have not seen enough to stand pat at right field in the offseason. Kyle Tucker is obviously the big fish a lot of teams will be after in free agency, but the Giants could also try for the trade route.

The Giants may not have a chance at the postseason, but what happens the rest of this season could have some important implications for who is playing second base and right field for the team in 2026.
