The SF Giants are spiraling down the drain right now and it feels a little like the world is ending. However, there has at least been one bright spot of positivity with second baseman Casey Schmitt who is thriving at the plate right now.
In an otherwise gut-wrenching, embarrassing, and soul-crushing loss to the San Diego Padres on Wednesday, Schmitt racked up four base hits in the 11-1 rout. In Schmitt's last 15 games he is slashing a solid .276/.323/.448 with two home runs and seven runs batted in.
Casey Schmitt lone spot of light for SF Giants during brutal stretch
The last time the Giants won which, do not hold me to this, I believe was sometime back in Obama's first term, Schmitt blasted a home run to power the team to victory. His emergence as the starting second baseman has been one of the more interesting developments this year and it will be worth watching to see if he can sustain this success.
While Christian Koss has looked good at second base as well and is at least pushing Schmitt for a mini-competition at the position, as of right now second base seems like Schmitt's job to lose.
Of course, last season at about this time the same could be said about Tyler Fitzgerald. The infielder was in the midst of a breakout season and seemed like he was establishing himself as a key part of the team's future plans in the infield.
Now, the Giants are trying weird experiments with Fitzgerald in the outfield that do not make much sense and show that they may not know what to do with him at this point.
The nice thing with Schmitt is that he is a plus defender who can play every infield position well. We have known for some time that he is very strong at third base, but with Matt Chapman there and Willy Adames at shortstop he is not going to find much playing time at either spot.
This season he has proven he is more than capable on the right side of the infield as well. He has looked very comfortable at second base and first base so he provides defensive value even if his bat runs cold at times.
The question for the Giants is if they see second base as a position they want to upgrade in the offseason. Schmitt has been good, but they may feel they can get someone better in free agency. Luis Arraez could be an option as could Ha-Seong Kim if he opts out of his contract, but if the Giants do not feel the need to spend on a second baseman then they may just give the job to Schmitt to start next season.
If he continues to hit how he has as of late, then the Giants may decide that is the best course of action.
