When Bay Area sports fans hear something dubbed “The Catch” there are only two plays that come to mind. The first is SF Giants outfielder Willie Mays' incredible over-the-shoulder catch in the 1954 World Series when the franchise was still in New York. The other is San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Dwight Clark’s leaping, fingertip grab against the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship game that helped launch a dynasty.
The Los Angeles Dodgers seem to think “The Catch” can be applied to them as they have a new bobblehead giveaway set to be given out in September depicting Andy Pages making a grab while colliding with Kiké Hernandez in the 2025 World Series with "The Catch" inscribed on the bobblehead.
Given the circumstances, it was a great play by Pages. It was Game 7 with the game tied, the bases loaded, two outs, and a deep drive to the warning track. If he doesn’t catch that ball the series would have been over and the Toronto Blue Jays would have won.
Still, there is only one “The Catch” in baseball history as @SFGiantsMemes noted on social media.
Sorry. There’s already a “The Catch” https://t.co/c1mSri1tv1 pic.twitter.com/yWr8MwG3KF

Dodgers are trying to rewrite baseball history with giveaway
For the Dodgers to try to claim that title as their own is just egregious and could very well just be an attempt to troll the Giants. Or maybe it just shows a complete lack of respect for baseball history. For a franchise that honors Jackie Robinson it’s a pretty gross oversight.
Yet, they’re the Dodgers so in their minds they can do whatever they want. They won two straight World Series titles and can basically sign or trade for any player they want so history doesn’t mean much to them.
The Giants are so far behind the Dodgers in terms of talent that it can feel silly to get upset about giveaways but that’s all Giants fans have right now. The Colorado Rockies may be San Francisco’s true rival based on the way next season’s schedule is set up.
It’s going to take many years before the Giants can catch up to the Dodgers on the field. It could potentially be decades before they can unseat Los Angeles for supremacy in the National League West.
The only way it will really happen is by building from within and after San Francisco added some promising young players in the MLB Draft there is hope that there are better days ahead.
But for now the Giants are far behind the Dodgers and it seems like it will be that way for a while. Their giveaway is annoying but maybe it is that sort of hubris and arrogance to declare that play as the definitive “The Catch” that will come back to bite them and prevent them from winning a third straight World Series.
