The SF Giants' 2027 schedule has been released. Of course, this comes with the stipulation that the 2027 season could potentially be delayed due to the pending lockout but we can still react to this drop.
San Francisco is scheduled to start the season on March 25 against the Colorado Rockies at home. One hopes there will be no Netflix theatrics this time around because that whole production may have cursed the 2026 Giants.
The Giants are also set to finish the season against the Rockies on September 26 in Colorado which reflects a sad new reality for the Giants and who their main rival may be these days. So much for starting the year against the New York Yankees and ending it against the Los Angeles Dodgers like 2026.
Whether intentional or not, it feels fitting that the Giants open and close the year against the Rockies rather than the Dodgers or San Diego Padres. While the Giants and Dodgers will always be rivals, the disparity between those two teams right now is immense.
The Dodgers are currently 61-36 on the year and are looking to win their third straight World Series title. The Giants are currently thinking about who they should trade away ahead of the trade deadline.
Giants seem to be in a race to not finish in last place
As sad as it is, the race to see which team finishes in fourth and fifth place in the National League West will be far more interesting than who wins the division since the Dodgers basically have it in the bag with an 11.5 game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Giants are much closer to the Rockies in terms of talent so it makes sense that they are scheduled to start and close the year against them. San Francisco only has a three game lead on Colorado in the standings as the Rockies are 39-59 so it could come down to the wire. The Giants and Rockies have split the season series 5-5 against each other so far this season so they really seem to be evenly matched as two bad teams.
There's even a chance that the Giants might try to undertake a quasi-rebuild like the Rockies have done. It's unlikely the Giants would tear everything down but we are probably going to see them trade a lot of players the next few weeks.
Maybe someday it will feel right for the Giants to open and close the season against the Dodgers, but for the current iteration of the team it feels fitting that they get matched up with a NL West basement dweller to start and end the 2027 season.Â
