In less than two weeks, the SF Giants will take on the New York Yankees for the first MLB regular season game of the year. Wednesday, March 25 will be "Opening Night" as the Giants and Yankees are the only two teams playing that night with the game being broadcast exclusively on Netflix.
It was just announced who will comprise the broadcast crew covering the game for Netflix, and Giants fans will be relieved to know that the legend and Reverend himself Hunter Pence will be in the booth for the game.
Netflix reveals Hunter Pence will call first Giants game of the season
Pence will be one of the color commentators in the booth for the game alongside Yankees legend, and Bay Area native, CC Sabathia. MLB Network's Matt Vasgersian will be the play-by-play man in the booth.
The pre-game and post-game coverage will be handled by Elle Duncan alongside former players Albert Pujols and Anthony Rizzo. Lauren Shehadi will be the on-field reporter and comedian Bert Kreischer will be a special guest. He probably has never taken his shirt off on a cool San Francisco night so he is in for a treat.
Netflix also plans to have 73 kayaks in McCovey Cove for the event in honor of the 73 home runs Barry Bonds hit back in 2001. Bonds is rumored to be an analyst for the game, likely on the pre-game or post-game coverage, and Netflix did leave a blank "Special Guest" teaser in a graphic with all of the analysts, broadcasters, and commentators for the game so that spot is almost certainly reserved for the Home Run King.
Some Giants fans are still going to be miffed about the game being on Netflix, though. Not everyone has a Netflix subscription and many Giants fans are used to hearing Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow calling the first game of the season. At least we'll have Pence and (fingers crossed) Bonds to tide us over until Friday, March 27 when the Giants have their first home day game of the season which will be called by the traditional broadcast crew.
There are plenty of interesting storylines coming into the Opening Night game, from Tony Vitello's first regular season game as a big league manager to Aaron Judge going back to Northern California.
It should be an interesting game and series to start the year and even though it will feel pretty weird to watch a Giants game on Netflix, at least some fan-favorites will be involved in the production.
