As SF Giants fans try to figure out the easiest way to watch the team’s games this season, the only option to watch the broadcast for Opening Night will be via a Netflix subscription.
It will be the first ever MLB game streamed on Netflix as the Giants will take on the New York Yankees to open the new season on Wednesday night, March 25. Oddly, the Giants will have a day off the next day before resuming the series on Friday.
Thankfully, Netflix is trying to get Barry Bonds, the Home Run King, involved with the production which would make the game so much more bearable for Giants fans.
Netflix trying to get Barry Bonds involved in Opening Nightt coverage
According to The Athletic, Netflix wants Bonds to be part of its pre and post-game coverage so he would not actually be calling the game. But it would still be very cool to have Bonds involved at all since Giants fans usually only get to hear from him if he pops into the booth to chat with Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper during a game.
He did just that last season and was in typical Bonds form as he gifted Kuiper a bobble head of himself since it was the giveaway at the ballpark that game.
Netflix is also trying to get Yankees great C.C. Sabathia, who also happens to be a Bay Area native, involved in the coverage which would make a ton of sense.
You can bet if Bonds is on board, they will show the highlight of him hitting an absolute bomb at Yankee Stadium back at the height of his powers.
We still do not know who will call the game or who the color commentators will be. With Netflix’s coverage of NFL games they have relied on established announcers from other networks so maybe they would try and replicate that strategy with baseball as well.
Other streamers who have gotten into baseball in recent years have gotten an analyst to represent both teams. Peacock’s coverage has had Hunter Pence in the booth so maybe he could be a color commentator along with a former Yankees player.
It’s bad enough that Netflix is depriving us of getting to hear Kruk and Kuip call the first game of the season so they had better have some decent analysts in the works so they game is not complete torture for Giants fans to watch.Â
After the first game of the season though, NBC Sports Bay Area will broadcast the majority of the games going forward and you can find out how to watch those games no matter where you are located here.
