SF Giants play-by-play broadcaster Duane Kuiper turned 75 years old today and he got a very sweet surprise in the broadcast booth courtesy of his son Cole, his fellow broadcasters, and president of baseball operations Buster Posey.
In between the second and third inning of Thursday's game against the Cleveland Guardians, the Giants PA announcer let the home faithful know it was Kuiper's 75th birthday and then the broadcast went into the booth to show Kuiper's son Cole, radio and TV announcers Dave Flemming and Jon Miller, and Posey surprise Kuiper in the booth with a cake.

SF Giants broadcaster Duane Kuiper gets special birthday surprise courtesy of Buster Posey
The cake they got for Kuiper was really amazing. It was a specialized cake that had an edible version of his No. 18 jersey that he wore as a member of the Giants with some edible versions of his old baseball cards from throughout his career. It also had a microphone on it to symbolize his legendary career as a broadcaster. It is fitting this game is against Cleveland since that is the only franchise other than the Giants that Kuiper ever played for.
It was a very cool moment and Kuiper was clearly touched by the gesture while at the same time showing that classic Midwestern embarrassment when made the center of attention which is not surprising from a Wisconsin farm boy.
Kuiper and his broadcast partner Mike Krukow have endeared themselves to Giants fans for decades with their entertaining banter and excellent and memorable calls. The two were teammates on the Giants back in the 1980's which was the beginning of a beautiful relationship that Giants fans have been lucky enough to have a front row seat to for decades.
The iconic duo was recently celebrated at an event put on by SF Sketchfest, a comedy festival in San Francisco. They told stories from over the years at the event with probably a bit more color and candor they ever could on the air, but Kruk and Kuip can make a game entertaining no matter what.
A recent example from a few weeks ago encapsulates how the two can make the game more fun. A fan in the stands at Oracle Park had attached a Coke bottle and a glove to each side of his head to try and replicate the iconic features of left field at Oracle Park and Kuiper dropped the hilarious line, "I think we've seen this gentleman before. He's creative. I mean, you get in your garage, you take a gummy and you never know what's gonna happen."

Just absolute gold from Kuip.
The former second baseman may have only had one home run in his big league career, but his legacy will be as a phenomenal broadcaster who is part of a duo that has regularly been voted among the best in baseball.
So happy birthday, Kuip! Thank you for all of the laughs and all of the memories. Giants fans everywhere appreciate you very much.
