Checking in on every SF Giants player dealt at the trade deadline a month later

It’s been exactly a month since the MLB trade deadline. A month ago on August 3rd the SF Giants were very busy trying to infuse their farm system with some more talent to take advantage of what has been a very disappointing season. 

As the Giants look to avoid having one of the worst seasons in the history of the franchise, it’s worth taking a look around the league to check in on some old friends who San Francisco chose to part with a month ago.

How all 6 Giants traded at deadline are doing a month later

Erik Miller

The Giants dealt reliever Erik Miller to the Boston Red Sox and since the trade he has been phenomenal. He’s only allowed one earned run in 11 and 1/3 innings of work and has struck out 20 batters while walking three.

That low walk number is remarkable since Miller always struggled with free passes in San Francisco. Perhaps Boston’s pitching coach Andrew Bailey, who was San Francisco’s pitching coach under Gabe Kapler, has fully unlocked Miller and will help turn him into an elite bullpen arm.

Heliot Ramos

The beginning of Heliot Ramos’ tenure with the New York Yankees was pretty brutal, and it has not gotten a lot better. He’s hitting .141/.286/.266 with New York and has one home run and four runs batted in. He has walked nine times though so maybe he will see better results if he continues to be patient.

Robbie Ray

The Giants dealt Robbie Ray to the San Diego Padres at the trade deadline and he has continued to be his usual, reliable self. He has a 3.42 ERA in five starts with San Diego which is roughly the same as his 3.08 ERA in San Francisco.

The Padres are still alive in the Wild Card race so maybe he can help them chase down the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Luis Arraez

After a torrid start with the Philadelphia Phillies, Luis Arraez has cooled down a bit. He’s hitting .280/.295/.383 with two home runs and 12 runs batted in. The Phillies are very likely to be a Wild Card team so they’ll be hoping Arraez really heats up in the playoffs.

Caleb Kilian

Unfortunately for the Phillies, Kilian struggled in his few outings with Philadelphia before landing on the IL. He should start throwing soon so maybe he will be back before the playoffs to help them out.

Tyler Mahle

Maybe the best Giants trade chip of all was the one the Giants gave away for the least. The Giants traded Tyler Mahle to the Atlanta Braves for Anthony Molina, who has been quite solid for San Francisco, and Mahle has a 1.48 ERA in five starts. This raises questions about why the Giants weren’t able to get the most out of him, but at this point let’s just hope he dominates the Dodgers if he faces them in the playoffs.

It will be another year of the Giants missing the playoffs, but at least we’ll be able to look at our TV screens during the playoffs and go “I remember that guy!” with these players. The prospects the Giants got at the trade deadline have looked pretty good in the minors so as of right now these all look like smart deals from San Francisco’s perspective.
