Yankees quickly learning frustrating Heliot Ramos lesson SF Giants know all too well

The SF Giants traded outfielder Heliot Ramos to the New York Yankees last week and it didn’t take long for his new team to discover what Giants fans learned a long time ago: he’s not that great on defense.

The Yankees were taking on the Atlanta Braves recently and our old friend Mike Yastrzemski hit a fly ball to his former teammate Ramos in left field. Ramos misplayed the ball slightly and allowed it to go over his head which allowed another old friend, Mauricio Dubon, to score. There were a lot of former Giants involved in the series.

The Yankees announcer clearly felt Ramos should have had the ball, saying, “Yastrzemski hit it well, but this is a ball, for the most part, that needs to be caught.”

In terms of worst Heliot Ramos plays in left field though, this one may not even crack the top five. Giants fans have seen him make some pretty egregious blunders the last few years so this should come as no shock.

Of course, Giants fans haven’t exactly had an upgrade in left field since Ramos left. Eddys Leonard grossly misplayed a ball in Saturday’s contest so maybe the Giants should stick with Grant McCray out there so at least they have a competent left fielder.

Heliot Ramos has been a bit cold since Yankees-Giants trade

It’s been a bit of a struggle so far for Ramos in New York. He has just two hits in 17 plate appearances entering Sunday's game but they have both been doubles. It will surely take time for him to adjust to his new team and new surroundings since he has only ever been with the Giants prior to the trade.

Although, it would be sort of funny if Ramos struggles in New York the same way that Camilo Doval struggled after the Giants traded him to the Yankees last year. Brian Cashman may not ever make a deal with Buster Posey again if he feels like Posey fleeces him every year.

The Giants got left-handed flamethrower Henry Lalane in the Ramos deal along with infielder Kaeden Kent, the son of Giants legend Jeff Kent. Lalane has had one start with the Eugene Emeralds, San Francisco’s High-A affiliate, and went 4 and 2/3 innings while allowing just one run and striking out five. Kent has yet to debut with the Emeralds but he was hitting .302/.359/.433 this season prior to the trade.

We will see who ends up winning this deal but it’s already evident that Ramos’ defense may be an issue in New York. Giants fans will miss Ramos for a number of reasons and he had a very solid tenure with San Francisco, but his defense will certainly not be looked back on longingly.
