Yankees cutting bait on Camilo Doval is more proof SF Giants fleeced New York

The New York Yankees have reportedly traded former SF Giants reliever Camilo Doval to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for two prospects according to Jeff Passan of ESPN. This just further proves that the Giants got rid of Doval at the perfect time and fleeced New York in the process.

San Francisco dealt him to New York last year at the trade deadline after he had a solid first half rebound following a rough 2024 campaign. The Yankees were hoping they were going to get the guy who was an All-Star in 2023 and, at his best, could be one of the most electric relievers in the game.

Instead, they got the bad version of Doval. He had a 4.82 ERA with the Yankees last season and had a 4.54 ERA with them this season before he got traded. Now we will have to see if he can resurrect his career with the Pirates.

Looking back at the Doval trade from last year, that might be the best move the Giants have made since Buster Posey became president of baseball operations. The Giants got pitchers Trystan Vierling and Carlos De La Rosa out of the deal along with catcher and utility man Jesus Rodriguez and infielder Parks Harber.

Rodriguez is on the big league club and has shown some promise this season while Harber has steadily progressed through the minors with his hot bat and is now in Triple-A Sacramento. There’s a good chance he gets called up to the big league club by the end of the season.

We’ll have to see what any of those four prospects turn into, but it’s obvious that the Giants got rid of Doval at the right time. Even though San Francisco’s bullpen has been pretty putrid since the trade deadline last year, something tells me having Doval in the mix would not have made things much better.

Maybe the Giants can pull off a similar deal at the deadline this year. They have some bullpen arms teams could find enticing such as JT Brubaker, Sam Hentges, Keaton Winn, and Erik Miller. Teams get desperate for bullpen help this time of year so the Giants would be wise to capitalize on that desperation yet again.

It’s an important deadline for the Giants so one hopes the moves they make this deadline will look as good as the ones they did at last year’s deadline.
