Earlier this season, the SF Giants picked up Bob Melvin's team option for 2026, but will he remain as the team's skipper after a disappointing season? Buster Posey was asked about Melvin's status for next season, but he did not provide a concrete answer.
Buster Posey sidesteps question about SF Giants manager Bob Melvin's status for 2026
On Thursday, Posey joined the Murphy and Markus Show on KNBR and was asked whether he is waiting to evaluate Melvin at the end of the year or locked in to him as the manager for next season. Posey did not show his cards and sidestepped the question:
"Our focus is completely on trying to win as many games as possible, and it's as simple as that. Our focus is on these next five weeks. "Buster Posey
Posey referenced an interview with John Shea of the San Francisco Standard (subscription required), where he was also asked about Melvin's status. His response was no different than the one he had on KNBR.
When the Giants picked up Melvin's team option for 2026, Posey was very complimentary of the veteran manager's work. Of course, that was in early July. By the end of that month, the Giants decided to sell after falling out of the playoff race. Things have not gone much better in August, but they have won six games in a row.
At 67-68, the Giants sit comfortably outside of the Wild Card picture. They are six games behind the New Yorm Mets for the third Wild Card spot. The Cincinnati Reds are also ahead of them in those standings.
It has been a disappointing year for a team that got off to such a strong start and only added to the excitement with the addition of Rafael Devers. There is too much talent on this club to struggle as much as they have, and that often does not reflect well on the manager. That said, the players also need to perform.
There are a few ways to look at Buster Posey's silence about Bob Melvin's status. In the context of an underperforming season, one way would be to view it as a sign that his job may be in jeopardy, but the Giants' top executive does not want to express that publicly.
Another way to look at it is that Posey's evaluation of Melvin is fluid. With how the Giants looked in the first half of the month, it seemed like a strong chance that the Giants would be making changes to the coaching staff. However, they have been better lately, and that might just be adding to the case to keep the longtime manager.
It may just come down to how the team finishes the year before Posey draws a conclusion on Melvin. One way or the other, he is not showing his cards about that topic right now. Rather, the focus is on finishing the year on a strong note.
