There was a lot to take away from Buster Posey’s press conference on Tuesday. His silence on the Pride Night controversy spoke volumes but he also shared some information about where the SF Giants stand ahead of the trade deadline.
When asked about whether the Giants are willing to field trade offers for ace Logan Webb, Posey said the team is not. If we are to take him at his word, maybe the Giants really aren’t interested in dealing Webb.
If they did trade away their ace it would basically signal that the Giants do not plan on being competitive the next few years, not just in 2026. But at the same time if the Giants are open to trading away their “big three” contracts to Matt Chapman, Willy Adames, and Rafael Devers then they should be open to offers for Webb.
Maybe the Giants are open to trading Webb but Posey is just playing hard to get. It’s not a bad strategy because there are a lot of teams out there that would be willing to give the Giants one heck of a package in exchange for Webb. Perhaps Posey's apparent unwillingness to trade his ace will make teams up their offer to try to get him interested.
If things continue to get worse and worse for the team in the next month and a half then they need to be listening to offers on everyone, including Webb. There’s a case to be made for tearing the team down and trying to start from scratch, building around rookie Bryce Eldridge.
Would Giants be willing to undertake a rebuild?
Whether ownership would be on board for that is another matter entirely. The Giants have not undertaken a full-scale rebuild like that in recent memory but it’s really not clear that this core group of players can comprise a winning baseball team.
The culture with the organization as a whole just feels so off right now which is why it may be time to hit the reset button. Manager Tony Vitello would likely be much more comfortable, and certainly more qualified, to coach a team full of young players eager to make their mark in the big leagues rather than a team with several overpaid, underperforming veterans at its nucleus.
There’s an argument to be made that Webb could still fit on a rebuilding team, but that would be unfair to him. He deserves to be on a contender and get a chance to pitch in the playoffs, something he hasn’t done since 2021.
The Giants shouldn’t get rid of Webb just to get rid of him, but they should be open to trade offers for him especially if a team is willing to give up a potential franchise-altering prospect. With how bad this season has gone, everything has to be on the table so one has to hope Posey is playing hard to get with Webb and isn't shutting the door on one of his best trade chips.
