On Friday, the Richmond Flying Squirrels secured a 3-0 victory in a rain-shortened game against the Harrisburg Senators. That victory clinched a first-half title, marking the second time this week that an SF Giants minor league affiliate has earned a playoff spot.
The other team was the Eugene Emeralds, who have dominated the Northwest League in every facet. For Richmond, this will be their first trip to the playoffs since 2023.
The playoff format is a lot different in the minor leagues. In the Eastern League, the playoffs consist of the winners of each division from both halves of the season. That league consists of two divisions, including the Northeast Division and the Southwest Division.
With a 40-20 overall record, the Flying Squirrels have a commanding lead in the Southeast Division. The Erie Seawolves are in second place with a 32-29 record.
The 2026 season has been a pleasant surprise for Richmond. For the better part of the past decade, that affiliate has often been light on talent. The Giants seemingly prefer to have their top prospects on the West Coast, so many of those players do not see an extended run in Double-A.
This year's roster is a much different story. It is a talented group, with several players who began the year in Double-A already earning a promotion to Triple-A. This includes Turner Hill, Scott Bandura, Drew Cavanaugh, Jonah Cox, and Aeverson Arteaga. roster
Despite promotions, SF Giants Double-A affiliate still has a lot of talent
The offense has led the way in the pitcher-friendly league. Richmond averages 6.17 runs per game and an .816 OPS, both of which lead the Eastern League. On the pitching side, they sit in the middle of the pack with a 4.75 ERA.
The lineup still has a lot of prospect talent. Bo Davidson is arguably the organization's top outfield prospect and has found a groove lately at the plate. Parks Harber continues to be one of the most intriguing hitters in the organization and will likely reach Triple-A before the end of the year. Harber came up as a corner infielder, but has been stretched out to left field this season.
Charlie Szykowny has been another productive bat in Richmond's lineup. He has an .834 OPS with eight home runs and 32 RBI in 237 plate appearances Ty Hanchey and Jean Carlos Sio have both performed well in limited action.
The pitching staff has some upside as well. Joe Whitman anchored that unit, but recently earned a promotion to Triple-A. Matt Wilkinson made a few appearances after the Patrick Bailey trade but has moved up another level as well.
Cesar Perdomo has quietly been one of the better arms in the organization, pitching to a 3.35 ERA in 11 outings this season. Yunior Marte and Ben Peterson have both shown some promise since moving up from High-A.
